In the aftermath of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022, there was a renewed interest in discussing Russian imperialism, and one of the voices leading the discussion in the arts sector is art historian and journalist Oksana Semenik.

Please join Oseredok on October 26, 2022, 12 PM-1 PM CST for a discussion with Oksana Semenik exploring her research in major American gallery collections, including the Metropolitan Museum, the MoMA, the Smithsonian, the Brooklyn Museum and others. Semenik’s presentation, ‘Decolonizing Ukrainian Art,’ explores and intertwines creativity, resistance, and ending the war.

Oksana Semenik is an art historian, journalist, researcher, and creator of the Twitter account Ukrainian Art History. Her texts about Ukrainian contemporary art were published in Ukrainian media, such as Ukrainian Pravda, Lb.ua, Local History, Your Art, Korydor, Vogue Ukraine, Magazyn RTV (Poland), etc. Last year, she worked as an assistant curator and researcher at the Zimmerli Museum. Her main research topic was the decolonization of Ukrainian art in the museum collection. She studied Art history at the Taras Shevchenko Kyiv University and Rutgers (NJ). Her thesis topic is the Image of the Chornobyl catastrophe in Ukrainian art. Now, she is an independent art historian writing books about Ukrainian art and working on a radio program about Ukrainian art history on Radio Culture (a national broadcast company). Fellow scholar at the University of Toronto (Petro-Jacyk Non-Residential Fellowship). Based in Kyiv, Ukraine.
