Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre proudly presents its major Fall Exhibition Season, featuring four simultaneous exhibitions that explore Ukrainian art and heritage from distinct contemporary and historical perspectives. As part of this grand opening, Oseredok presents Ukrainian Voice: A Legacy Mosaic, curated by Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladyn. This unique exhibition offers an immersive intersection of art and history, transforming over 6,000 rescued historical printing blocks from the legendary Trident Press into a monumental visual and interactive experience.
Published in Winnipeg since 1910, Ukraïns’kyi holos («Український голос»; Ukrainian Voice) served as a vital lifeline for the Ukrainian-Canadian community for over a century. When the press closed its doors in 2018, thousands of corroded zinc, copper, and lead printing blocks — depicting portraits of pioneers, community leaders, advertisements, historical events, and intricate embroidery patterns — were discovered abandoned in the basement.
Through a massive collaborative effort of saving, archiving, cleaning, and artistic assembly led by Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladyn, Theodora Harasymiw, sculptor Royden Mills, and dedicated community volunteers, these forgotten fragments of material history have been resurrected. The exhibition features the monumental mosaic installation alongside rare artifacts, including a c. 1930 Century Master Studio Camera from Charles Photo Studio on Selkirk Avenue, historical editions of the newspaper, and an interactive digital image recognition layer that connects viewers directly to the archival identities behind the images.
Ukrainian Voice: A Legacy Mosaic is a tribute to the endurance of community, print media, and visual memory.
